Animal-Assisted Therapy

Why Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT)?

Animals offer unconditional presence. They do not judge, interpret, or challenge—making them especially powerful companions for individuals who may feel anxious, guarded, or overwhelmed in traditional talk therapy.

Key benefits in Psychotherapy:

Reduces Anxiety and Stress
The simple act of petting or sitting with an animal can help regulate the nervous system, lower stress levels, and promote a sense of calm. This makes it easier for individuals to feel safe and grounded during sessions.

Encourages Emotional Expression
Animals can act as a bridge to deeper emotional exploration. Clients often find it easier to open up in the presence of an animal, using the connection as a starting point to express thoughts and feelings.

Builds Trust and Safety
For clients who have experienced trauma or struggle with trust, the soothing presence of an animal can help create a secure and welcoming therapeutic environment, gradually strengthening comfort with the therapist.

Enhances Engagement
Animal-assisted therapy can be particularly effective for children, teens, and individuals who may find traditional therapy intimidating or difficult to engage in. The animal offers a natural focal point and fosters interaction.

Supports Mindfulness and Connection
Animals live in the present moment, gently guiding clients to do the same. This can promote mindfulness, emotional regulation, and a deeper sense of connection—to self and others.

A Gentle Path to Healing

Incorporating animals into therapy sessions adds warmth, authenticity, and a sense of ease that can make the therapeutic journey feel more approachable. Whether offering comfort during difficult conversations or simply sharing quiet moments, therapy animals help create a space where healing can unfold naturally.

If you're looking for a compassionate, holistic approach to mental health, animal-assisted psychotherapy offers a powerful and nurturing path forward.

Meet Oscar

I am delighted to introduce Oscar, the newest (and furriest) member of the team. Oscar is an 8‑month‑old Bernese Mountain Dog and Great Pyrenees mix, chosen specifically for his calm, gentle, and warm temperament, qualities that make him naturally suited for therapeutic work.

From the moment he arrived, Oscar showed an intuitive ability to bring comfort simply by being present. He loves being around people and has a way of making both children and adults feel at ease. His steady, affectionate nature is already supporting clients in feeling grounded, safe, and welcomed.

Oscar is currently working toward his certification as a therapy dog, engaging in ongoing training to develop the skills needed to support clients in sessions. As he continues to grow and learn, he will gradually take on a larger role in providing co‑regulation, emotional support, and gentle companionship during therapy.

I am thrilled to have Oscar as part of the therapeutic community, and I look forward to the warmth and connection he brings to the space.
